Granada - The Alhambra - Generalife

We rise up early, grab a quick breakfast and arrive at the Alhambra ticket
counter on a cold, dark and windy morning. It's 7:05am and there's more
than a hundred people lined up. We quickly take a place in the queue. The
queue rapidly grows in length as the first rays of the sun peek over the horizon.
Soon, a second queue forms,
this queue however leads to an enterprising Café bar which makes a roaring
business selling coffee and hot chocolate to the hungry and cold masses lining
up. After a while, a few people start wandering around in the search of the
holy servicio (washrooms) of La Alhambra. We get our tickets at 9:30. In
order to control the crowds and limit the number of visitors, there is a
time slot for each section of the Alhambra. This meant that we could only
spend so much time in each area.
Since we can get to the Palace areas at 11:00, we decide to tour the Generalife
first. The name Generalife or Yannat al Arif has various translations.
Some say it means paradise gardens or even the Garden of Lofty paradise. It could also
mean the gardens with a thousand gardeners! When you wonder about this magnificent
place, you'll find well manicured lawns, pruned trees and bubbling water channels.
Historically, the Generalife contained a pasture and fruiting orchards presumeably
to supply the Palace.
The walk around the Generalife can take as short as half-an-hour but we'd recommend you
take you time to savor the views of Granada city below, the beautiful roses and gardens.
The problem with such a popular place is that you'll always have someone in your way when you
are trying to composed a photo. The unexpected benefit of the quota entry system is that any
one place isn't completely flooded with tourists but it can still get pretty crowded at
vantage points.
