WebAperture FAQ

General Questions

  1. What is WebAperture?
WebAperture is a forum-like website for photographers (amateurs as well as professionals) to showcase their photos on the Internet and gather comments and criticisms on it. It's also a place to show off our photos. What can I say, we're shameless ;-)

  2. Who created and maintains WebAperture?
This site is created by Eugene Khoo and Jeffrey Chok. It is hosted on JTLNet but we are the ones who build and maintain it.

  3. Do you get paid running WebAperture?
Nope, WebAperture runs on a Pure-Loss Model. True business people would be wondering if we're mentally sound, which I assure you we are (I think).

  4. Do I need to pay money to upload my photos?
No. WebAperture is completely free (unlike some other things)! All you need to do is sign up and you'll get a set quota of photos to upload.

  5. What is Quokka?
The Quokka is WebAperture's mascot. This marsupial lives on Rottnest Island just off the coast near Perth, Australia. It's probably found elsewhere too but we saw it there first. I could give you a description of what's a quokka, but I will not, better you go to Rottnest Island's Quokka Page to find out more.

  6. How do I get my portrait in? / How do I get that little picture icon next to my name when I make a comment on a photo?
It's quite simple actually. Log in to WebAperture. You should be taken to the "My WA" page. If not, click on the link indicated in the image below:
    help_wa_portraits0 (3K)
You would see the screen below. If you click the edit icon (Indicated as #1 below), you will have a new section opening up just below (Indicated by #2). Finally, click on the Browse button to find the photo file you wish to upload. When you click submit, (Indicated by #3) The selected file will be automatically uploaded and displayed. Note that there are limits to the image you can submit. Also, please adhere to posting policy guidelines when posting images here. Violations of the posting policy will result in permanent account suspension, no IF, no BUT and no WHY. help_wa_portraits1 (13K)

  7. Why do some members have a PATRON icon?
Patrons are members who have decided to make a voluntary contribution to WebAperture. Donations are strictly voluntary (and so is the amount). Some contribute once, others might decide to contribute every few months but the decision is up to you. See the Support WA page for more information.

  8. What is the recommended web browser for WebAperture?
For best results and looks, you should be running Netscape 6.0 or Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.

  9. What web browser are you using?
We're using FireFox. You can find out more information here.
    FireFox

  10. What equipment does Eugene and Jeff use?

Eugene shoots digitally 100% of the time now (he uses a Canon EOS-20D digital SLR). He has the following lenses 16-35mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 24-105mm f4 IS and a Canon 550EX and 580EX II flash.

    Jeff uses a Canon EOS-350D (Digital Rebel XT) Digital SLR. He has the following lenses 17-40 f4, 24-85mm f3.5-4.5, 70-210mm f3.5-4.5, 50mm f1.8 and 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 and a Canon 420EX flash.
